Hudson Institute will host State Secretary of the Latvian Ministry of Defense Janis Garisons for a discussion on defending the Baltic region from Russian aggression. He will be joined by RAND Corporation Senior Political Scientist Stephen J. Flanagan andHudson Senior Fellow Tod Lindberg.

Russian aggression has tested the alliance between NATO and the Baltics in recent years. Russia's incursion into Georgia in 2008 and its 2014 annexation of Crimea raised concerns that the country's aggressive behavior may soon be turned towards the Baltics. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have taken steps to resist Russian antagonism and NATO allies have demonstrated commitment to their defense through the deployment of military assets in the region. The panel will discuss what action may still be needed in order to sustain unity and deter Russia.
