The shale revolution has led to America’s reemergence as an energy superpower in oil and natural gas. Can shale also trigger a transportation revolution in the United States? Will the advent of new “alternate” or future fuels enable new technology ranging from compressed and liquid natural gas-powered vehicles to ethanol and methanol derived from natural gas feedstock?

On May 7th, Hudson Institute hosted a day-long conference to address the critical economic, political, and technological issues surrounding future fuels and their impact on America’s energy security. John Hofmeister, the former president of Shell Oil Company, delivered the keynote address.

Panelists discussed the lessons the U.S. can learn from other countries—and from its own automotive industry—in transitioning to alcohol fuels for vehicles and evaluate the risks and opportunities on the road ahead for a future fuel-driven transportation system. Panelists also shed new light on the steps policymakers can take to create a common competitive market for future fuels that preserves the advantages of the free market while embracing technological breakthroughs.
