Komei Isozaki is a nonresident senior fellow at Hudson Institute.

Biography

Komei Isozaki is a nonresident senior fellow at Hudson Institute. He is also a senior fellow at the Trans-Pacific Group and a senior manager at Deloitte Tohmatsu Space and Security in Japan.

He is an expert in Japanese defense policy, space security, and biological and chemical weapons conventions. His research areas include defense and space strategy, with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region. He has a deep knowledge of intelligence operations and foreign policy of the Tokugawa Shogunate in the early modern era. His most recent research covers Japan’s role in the unification process of the Korean Peninsula and the rise of the US–Japan–South Korea partnership against the emerging China–Russia–North Korea security framework.

From 2018 to 2022, Mr. Isozaki was senior director for business integration and partner coordination of the Tokyo Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, where he protected and implemented the supply rights of the International Olympic Committee’s highest-level sponsors through the TOP program.

From 2016 to 2018, he was director of the Biological and Chemical Weapon Conventions Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. Mr. Isozaki was a visiting fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies from 2005–06 and 2012–14.

Previously, Mr. Isozaki worked for the Ministry of Defense of Japan for nearly 30 years. His portfolio included space policy, cyber policy, strategic dialogue, intelligence, and peacekeeping operations. He served as policy advisor to the commander of the Northern Army between 2010 and 2012.

Mr. Isozaki received an MA in international relations from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, and BA in laws from Keio University.

Mr. Isozaki has published various articles on US-Japan relations and Japanese partnership with NATO. Those include “The Evolution of the Partnership between NATO and Japan” (Asia-Pacific Bulletin, November 2023), Strengthening International Cooperation in Managing China-Related Proliferation Challenges (Hudson Institute, 2023), and “The Evolving Relationship Between NATO and Japan under the Second Trump Administration” (Fletcher Security Review 12, no. 1).
