Join the Hudson Institute for a discussion of ways the US government and Department of Defense could foster the development of a US 5G industry.

The event will start with an overview of DoD’s efforts to introduce 5G into the US military by Dr. Joseph Evans, Principal Director for 5G in the Office of the Director of Defense Research and Engineering (Modernization). Bryan Clark, Director of the Hudson Institute Center for Defense Concepts and Technology, will then present the results of the study he recently completed with Adjunct Fellow Dr. Dan Patt, Weaponizing the 5G Value Chain

The event will close with a panel discussion of what will be needed to establish a robust US 5G telecommunications industry moderated by Hudson Institute Senior Fellow Dr. Tom Duesterberg and including Cheryl Davis, Senior Director for Strategic Initiatives at Oracle; Chris Boyer, Vice President of Security & Technology Policy at AT&T; and Steve Papa, Founder, CEO, and Chairman of Parallel Wireless.

American political and commercial leaders are concerned that the United States is falling behind in the competition to field 5G communication networks. The United States led introduction of 4G networks more than a decade ago, but in the intervening years American companies that pioneered mobile high-bandwidth communications have faded from prominence. The advent of 5G provides an opportunity to reestablish an ecosystem of radio equipment manufacturers, network integrators, and cloud computing providers that could allow US 5G networks to leapfrog over foreign competitors and move up the 5G value chain, delivering the capacity and specialized services needed for the next generation of mobile applications. Catalyzing this revolution, however, will require smart and sustained government policies and investment in the microelectronics supply chain and technology demonstrations.
