Matt Ridley

Author, "How Innovation Works: And Why It Flourishes in Freedom"

**This event will premiere on this page at 12:00 p.m. EDT, Monday, August 10.**

Join Hudson Institute for a discussion with Matt Ridley, an award-winning author and member of the House of Lords of the United Kingdom, on his new book, "How Innovation Works: And Why It Flourishes in Freedom." In the book, Ridley couples case studies with economic and historical analysis to argue why innovation flourishes in free societies.

Innovation arises when producers are free to create and produce new products without heavy-handed regulations or cumbersome laws enacted to protect the powerful interests that innovation displaces. In the book, Ridley's case studies dissect some of the classic innovations of the Industrial Revolution, the Digital Revolution, and the Biotech Revolution, and he details how regulatory controls and political cronyism can inhibit new ideas.

The event will draw on themes from Ridley's book and examine what role intellectual property has played in the growth in innovation. Hudson Senior Fellow Adam Mossoff will moderate the discussion.
