Last week, the Maduro regime and the leaders of Venezuela’s democratic opposition agreed on a framework for elections, expected to take place in the second half of 2024. While the agreement allows for international election observers, it fails to address the eligibility of leading opposition candidate María Corina Machado, who remains disqualified from holding public office. In the wake of the agreement, the Biden administration lifted some sanctions on the Maduro regime but insisted that the sanctions will be reinstated if Venezuela does not honor its commitments.

Please join Hudson Institute for a discussion on the agreement and what it means for the possibility of competitive elections in Venezuela. Hudson Adjunct Fellow Daniel Batlle will be joined by Mark Feierstein, senior advisor at the US Institute for Peace and Albright Stonebridge Group, and José R. Cárdenas, former acting assistant administrator for Latin America at the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
