Key Takeaways

1. There is no better asset in combatting the Chinese Communist Party’s ambitions than a vibrant and thriving Chinese-speaking democracy on its doorstep.

2. It is not only morally right to stand with the Taiwanese and commit ourselves to Taiwan’s defense. It is also unquestionably in the United States’ economic and national security interest. If we fail to defend Taiwan and uphold a free and open Indo-Pacific, the results will be catastrophic at home and abroad.

3. To establish the three necessary layers of deterrence against China before it is too late, the US should support and encourage Taiwan to make improvements in its own training, reserve programs, and readiness; ensure we have the military readiness and capability to act in the Taiwan Strait if necessary; and guarantee devastating economic sanctions through the STAND with Taiwan Act.
