With Venezuelan President-elect Edmundo González now in exile in Spain and many pro-democracy leaders in hiding, Venezuela’s struggle for freedom has entered a new phase. Strongman Nicolás Maduro has ramped up political repression, which a United Nations fact-finding mission has denounced for its intense and systematic nature. The Maduro regime has also worked to ensure loyalty within its ranks and strengthen alliances with its sponsors. Venezuela’s democratic opposition faces an uncertain future as it pushes for international recognition of González as president-elect and seeks to keep alive the hope of a democratic transition.

Join Hudson Institute for a discussion on political repression in Venezuela, what the latest developments mean for the democratic opposition’s strategy, and the ramifications for the United States’ policy. Hudson Adjunct Fellow Daniel Batlle will moderate a discussion with former Acting Assistant Administrator for Latin America at the US Agency for International Development (USAID) José R. Cárdenas, TVV Network Journalist Carla Angola, and Venezuelan pro-democracy activist Jesús Armas Nuevo.
