Michael D. Griffin

Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, U.S. Department of Defense

Hudson Institute will host a discussion with Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering Michael Griffin on priorities, progress made over the last year, and the future of the Department of Defense (DoD) Research & Engineering enterprises. Under Secretary Griffin will discuss how R & E has increased the United States’ war fighting capabilities; how it is preparing for future conflicts and responding to increased aggression from U.S. adversaries like China, Russia, and rogue nations like Iran and North Korea; and how it will continue to support U.S. national security priorities by fostering innovation and maintaining U.S. technological superiority. The discussion will be moderated by Hudson Senior Fellow Rebeccah Heinrichs.

In his current role, Under Secretary Griffin leads the department’s research, development, and prototyping activities. He oversees the activities of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Missile Defense Agency, the Strategic Capabilties Office, Defense Innovation Unit, the DoD Laboratory enterprise, and the Under Secretariate staff focused on developing advanced technology and capabilities for the U.S. military. Griffin has served as a NASA Administrator and as head of the Space Department at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.
