Important changes are reshaping the political landscape across Latin America. While the last decade has been dominated by great polarization and populist authoritarianism, recent elections in Argentina and Peru signal important developments in the region. Regimes built on democratic values appear to be replacing populist governments. Will this new wave of democratic governance bring real change to the Latin America? Should the U.S. increase its engagement in the region to further a shared interest in democratic governance and social development?

On July 7, Hudson Institute’s Center for Latin American Studies hosted a discussion with Dr. Robert Funk, a professor of political science at the University of Chile, and Dr. Hector Schamis, an adjunct professor at Georgetown University, on the prospects for broader democratic change in Latin America. Amb. Jaime Daremblum, director of Hudson Institute’s Center for Latin American Studies, gave introductory remarks and moderated.
