Harlan Ullman

Author, A Handful of Bullets: How the Murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand Still Menaces the Peace

Author Harlan Ullman suggests that the major challenges faced in today's modern world—terrorism, pandemics, failing states, and conflict zones—threaten the global order. Despite growing interdependence among countries, Ullman contends, there is still reluctance by many governments to work together for combined strategic approaches to redress these issues.

In A Handful of Bullets: How the Murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand Still Menaces the Peace, Ullman lays out what he considers the biggest challenges confronting the U.S. and the need for strategic solutions. Ullman’s book goes back in history to tell the story of three transformational legacies of the First World War that continue to impact and shape today's international order. A hundred years later, the U.S. still struggles to contain, mitigate, or prevent disruptions from exploding into global crises.

On Tuesday, January 20, Hudson Institute hosted Ullman for a discussion of his new book and the solutions he offers for creating a more stable world order. The discussion was moderated by Ambassador Husain Haqqani, Director for South & Central Asia at Hudson Institute and former Ambassador of Pakistan to the United States.
