The landmark Taiwan Relations Act, signed into law 45 years ago today, has become the most pivotal guideline for a complex era of United States–Taiwan–China relations. The bill is a foundational document that demonstrates America’s institutional resilience and balanced approach to diplomacy.

Miles Yu, director of Hudson’s China Center, shares his critical analysis of the act’s legal and military protections of Taiwan, its historical context, its impact and limitations, and the need to revise or even redraft new legislation to reflect a new geopolitical reality in this conversation with Shane Leary.
