The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is considering a proposal to make available for unlicensed use a substantial portion of valuable spectrum currently allocated for commercial licensed and governmental uses. The market value of these spectrum bands is likely in the tens of billions of dollars, with potential consumer welfare much higher still.
Join Hudson Institute for a conversation with Thomas Hazlett, former chief economist of the FCC and one of the world’s leading experts on spectrum policy, as he discusses market-based approaches to spectrum allocation. The FCC proposal favors some business models over others, introduces transaction costs, and may foreclose efficiency gains from other competitive uses of spectrum.
