Under Nicolas Maduro's leadership, the Venezuelan economy has been devastated by persistent economic mismanagement and declining oil prices. Support for Maduro has cratered along with it.

On December 6th, Maduro faces his most significant challenge yet. Parliamentary elections could see the political opposition take power for the first time in more than fifteen years. Could change finally be coming to long-suffering Venezuela? Or might a desperate Maduro suppress the opposition and go as far as to cancel the elections? The country stands at a crossroads. The path it takes will have consequences not only for Venezuela itself, but also for the United States, Venezuela’s largest trading partner and a haven for thousands of Venezuelans who have fled the Chavez/Maduro system.

On October 6th, Hudson Institute hosted a panel discussion to analyze the circumstances in Venezuela and Maduro’s next moves. Gustavo Coronel, Aníbal Romero, Gerver Torres, and Rubén M. Perina joined Ambassador Jaime Daremblum, director of Hudson’s Center for Latin American Studies, for an important discussion on Venezuela’s future.
