In 2009, Turkey’s then-Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan likened China’s brutal treatment of the Uyghur population to an act of “genocide.” Yet as China’s persecution of the Uyghurs has escalated, President Erdogan’s government and the media it controls have become conspicuously silent. What accounts for this stark reversal in Turkey’s stance? Opposition to China’s genocidal policies and the Erdogan regime has been growing inside Turkey among nationalist and Islamic groups. How will this affect Turkish politics and bilateral relations in the years ahead? Join Hudson Institute for a discussion on this issue with Hudson Senior Fellows Eric Brown and Nury Turkel and Cato Institute Senior Fellow Mustafa Akyol.
