Many of the nation's public transportation systems, now aging rapidly, face unprecedented pressure from rising service costs and declining market share. In an era of fiscal austerity, ride-sharing, and the emergence of autonomous vehicles, can our legacy transit systems meet today's challenges by embracing a greater role for the private sector?

On December 12, Hudson Institute hosted an event on the future of U.S. public transit systems keynoted by D.J. Gribbin, Special Assistant to the President for Infrastructure Policy. Following Gribbin's remarks, David Horner moderated a panel discussion featuring Maryland Secretary of Transportation Pete K. Rahn, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority General Manager and CEO Paul J. Wiedefeld, and Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority CEO Phillip A. Washington.
